why Strawberry Moon?

Strawberries represent good luck, humility, kindness, fertility, modesty, goodwill, and happiness. They are juicy and sweet and remind us of the best parts of summer. The moon represents the rhythm of time, gentleness, sensitivity, compassion, and connection with others. The full moon in particular is a time to celebrate growth, note progress and reflect on how far you have come. If you swirl all of that together, you come up with the perfect summary of what I hope to accomplish with Strawberry Moon Magazine.

We are celebrating artists, reflecting on what art journaling is and where it is going. We try to do it with sensitivity, kindness, goodwill, and compassion. We are connecting readers with artists and each other. Hopefully we bring some good luck and happiness to everyone involved.

What is an art journal anyway?

Art journals are as different as the artists who create them! They are usually book-shaped, but they can be any size (big or small or in between) and they usually incorporate imagery of some kind. Paint, collage, photographs, drawings, written or typed words—anything (and more) goes!

(And book-shaped doesn’t necessarily mean squares or rectangles, either!)

The Strawberry Moon June Art Challenge is here! Re The Strawberry Moon June Art Challenge is here! Remember, this is a daily-ISH challenge, no one is ever behind, we're just here to have fun and make art.

This is my take on the first prompt: Rainbow Pride. My favorite color is RAINBOW and I have painted and collaged many variations of rainbows in my art journals (plus I did a 100 day project about rainbows!).

This one is all watercolor paint and gel pen. I love doing these mosaic type pieces, where I start with one color and distribut it around the space to fill and then repeat (and repeat) with other colors until it's all full! I drew the rainbow stripes in with pencil -- very lightly and very wonky. I've also done a variation where I filled the stripes first with a very light wash of color, so that none of the white paper shows.

I'd love to see what you create -- use the hashtag #StrawberryMoonJuneArt2023 and tag me!

To join in the challenge:
1. Swipe to see all of the prompts
2. Create art!
Strawberry Moon June Art Challenge starts TOMORROW Strawberry Moon June Art Challenge starts TOMORROW!!

I believe in daily-ISH challenges -- if you decide to join in, you are never ever behind! We are here to have fun and make art. My prompts are a combination of June "stuff"--some serious and some silly, plus some art supply prompts and a few technique prompts. And yes, we do have something strawberry 🍓 related THREE times this month. (And three moon phases 🌕 🌙 🌑 , too).

(In case you are wondering...in the US, the full moon is *technically* on the 4th, but that's National Cheese Day, and that had to stay...so we're celebrating the full moon with the parts of the world where it falls on the 3rd.)

New this year is The Longest Day fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Assocation. My family has lost a number of elders to this horrible disease including, most recently, my mother-in-law. To say that I am worried for my husband and children is understating the emotion. Which is why we fundraise for the research that will hopefully one day eliminate Alzheimer's.

I'll be posting every day this month with my take on the prompts and will share as many of yours as I can. (With the caveat that sometimes my brain says "no more IG" and I have to take a break....). And on June 21st, you are invited to join me for an Art Journaling Marathon -- my goal is 26 art journal pages -- I'll be in a Zoom hangout starting at 8:00am CDT with guest hosts joining me throughout the day. Bring your own projects and hang out with us as we make art for The Longest Day.

 LINKS IN BIO, OF COURSE
